Oando, a leading energy provider in Africa, has revealed its intention to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its next drilling project to enhance operational efficiency. The company’s Group CEO, Wale Tinubu, shared the plans during an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, emphasizing that AI would help optimize resources and improve performance in future drilling operations.
Tinubu explained, “AI is a big game-changer. In drilling, we often face decisions with significant cost implications, and AI can help us explore all potential solutions based on past experiences, streamlining our decision-making process.” Oando looks forward to deploying AI in its upcoming drilling campaigns to improve both efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
In addition to AI adoption, Oando is also taking significant strides toward sustainability. Tinubu announced a partnership with the Lagos state government to deploy 5,000 electric buses for public transportation, using gas as a transitional fuel to produce the electricity needed to power the buses. The initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s carbon emissions, with Tinubu noting that transportation is responsible for 10% of global emissions. He further emphasized that transitioning public transport to electric vehicles could reduce emissions by 5% almost immediately.
This project, which will begin as a pilot in Lagos, is part of Oando’s broader commitment to cleaner energy solutions and decarbonization. Tinubu explained, “For every modicum of carbon we contribute, we are also ensuring we capture that carbon and focus on providing cleaner energy solutions.” Oando’s focus on e-vehicles and carbon capture techniques aligns with its ‘just’ energy transition drive, contributing to global efforts to reduce environmental impact.
