The Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU) in Ogun State has successfully established 2,000 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs), creating opportunities for women to access finance, acquire skills, and build social capital to improve their livelihoods and living conditions.
The State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, emphasized at the project’s kickoff that the women’s groups were not formed for political purposes. Instead, the initiative aims to equip women with financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and knowledge of savings and investment while fostering economic connections.
The Project Coordinator, Mrs. Bolanle Fadairo described the achievement as a notable milestone highlighted by the national Project Management Information System (PMIS). She explained that the formation of the groups is expected to establish a strong economic network among women in Ogun State, strengthening their ability to generate income and improve household welfare.
Fadairo also highlighted that achieving such numbers within just six weeks demonstrates the state’s strong institutional readiness and commitment to women’s empowerment under the Scale-Up phase of NFWP-SU. She credited the accomplishment to the visionary leadership of the state government and the unwavering support of key stakeholders.
She commended the collaborative efforts of the Ministries of Finance, Women Affairs and Social Development, and Budget and Planning, alongside the dedication of the State Project Coordinating Unit (SPCU), for driving the initiative.
Providing a breakdown of the WAGs across the four implementing local government areas, Fadairo revealed that Ijebu-Ode recorded 760 groups, accounting for 38% of the total, while Ifo Local Government established 569 groups, representing 28.45%. Sagamu Local Government formed 378 groups, making up 18.9%, and Ado-Odo/Ota recorded 293 groups, representing 14.64%. She noted that the spread reflects effective community mobilization and strong grassroots engagement across the project areas.
Fadairo reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustaining momentum, deepening impact, and consolidating gains under the NFWP-SU. She emphasized that the program aims to position Ogun State as a reference point for effective implementation and inclusive women-focused development nationwide.
