OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Agent – What It Is, How It Works & All You Need to Know
Share

OpenAI has rolled out a powerful upgrade to ChatGPT, turning the chatbot into an active digital agent capable of completing complex tasks independently. This development, announced on Thursday, July 17, 2025, is available to users on the Pro, Plus, and Team tiers, marking a major step forward in AI-powered productivity.

With this upgrade, ChatGPT no longer simply responds to prompts, it can now handle real-world digital tasks from start to finish, using a virtual computer. From managing calendars and analyzing business competition to planning meals and creating presentations, users can delegate full workflows with just a single prompt. OpenAI says the upgrade integrates three of its most advanced tools Operator, Deep Research, and the core ChatGPT model iinto a seamless system that combines reasoning and action.

The agentic system enables ChatGPT to navigate websites, run code, click, scroll, type, and deliver fully formed outputs such as editable reports, slide decks, or spreadsheets. It can operate multiple tools at once, fetching calendar data through APIs, verifying real-time information on the web, and sending task updates to users in real time. The AI can also integrate with platforms like Gmail and GitHub, making it possible to fetch emails, analyze code, or include external documents in its workflow—all under user supervision.

OpenAI emphasized that control and security remain central. The AI will only take meaningful actions, like signing into platforms or accessing private data, with the user’s permission. Users can also step in at any point to interrupt or guide the task.

The new capabilities are already being seen as a game-changer for both work and daily life. In professional environments, ChatGPT can now automate tasks like rescheduling meetings, compiling data reports, or building presentations. On the personal side, it can organize vacations, shop online, or plan events.

OpenAI described this release as the beginning of a broader roadmap toward even smarter, faster, and more capable AI agents. As global tech giants continue to bet on agentic systems to reduce operational burdens and boost efficiency, this move signals OpenAI’s intention to lead in shaping the future of autonomous digital work.
