Orange Partners with OpenAI and Meta to Develop AI Models for African Regional Languages
Share

Orange has announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI and Meta to fine-tune AI Large Language Models (LLMs) for African regional languages, beginning with Wolof and Pulaar. This initiative, aimed at fostering digital inclusion, will allow customers to interact with Orange in their local languages for services like customer support and sales.

  1. Addressing Language Gaps
    • This project focuses on languages that are not yet understood by current generative AI models, such as Wolof (spoken by 16 million people) and Pulaar (spoken by 6 million people) in West Africa.
    • The goal is to expand the use of artificial intelligence in Africa by making it accessible to illiterate populations who may otherwise be excluded from digital services.
  2. Open-Source AI Models for Public Good
    • The custom AI models developed will be open-source and licensed for non-commercial use in areas like public health and education.
    • The initiative aims to drive AI innovation while mitigating the digital divide that many African populations face.
  3. AI for Local Startups and Collaborations
    • Orange will collaborate with local startups and technology companies to tailor AI solutions to African languages, helping these businesses grow.
    • This initiative will also encourage broader participation in AI development across the continent, benefiting local communities and economies.
  4. Future Expansion and Long-Term Goals
    • While the first phase of the project focuses on Wolof and Pulaar, Orange’s long-term goal is to expand to all languages spoken across its 18-country footprint in Africa.
    • The company will fine-tune models such as OpenAI’s Whisper (speech) and Meta’s Llama (text) to better understand regional languages.
  5. Commitment to Responsible AI
    • Orange emphasizes the importance of responsible AI, selecting the simplest and most effective solutions to minimize environmental impact and reduce costs.
    • The company also seeks to promote open-source AI projects, ensuring affordable AI solutions for everyone.
  6. Collaborative Efforts with OpenAI and Meta
    • The partnership includes direct access to OpenAI’s advanced AI models in Europe, allowing Orange to enhance its AI capabilities and services across its footprint.
    • It also enables Orange to leverage the latest AI advancements, such as AI-based voice interactions, to improve customer engagement.

Impact on Africa and Digital Inclusion

Orange’s initiative is set to significantly enhance AI access for millions of people across Africa, especially those in remote or underserved regions. By adapting AI to local languages, the project helps to bridge the digital divide, offering affordable and inclusive solutions that benefit both the tech ecosystem and the broader population.

This collaboration signals a major step toward AI-driven economic growth and digital empowerment across Africa, with the potential to transform industries ranging from healthcare and education to customer service and business development
