In a major step toward improving food safety and reducing contamination, the Plateau State Government has partnered with Heifer International to establish a large cold room at the Farin Gada Market in Jos. The facility aims to help traders and agricultural vendors store food in safer conditions, curbing the spread of harmful bacteria and reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses.
The initiative was announced by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, during the commemoration of the 2025 World Food Safety Day, marked under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.”
Baamlong described the cold room project as a significant development that would benefit both vendors and consumers. “The cold room plays a crucial role in minimising food poisoning by maintaining food at safe temperatures,” he said. “It significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses by slowing the growth of bacteria, fungi, and parasites.”
According to the commissioner, the new facility will enable market traders to preserve perishable produce and protect them from contamination, especially in a tropical environment where food spoilage is common.
He emphasized that food safety requires consistent application of scientific practices across the entire food chain — from production and distribution to consumption. “Food safety is not just a public health issue; it is also a shared responsibility,” Baamlong said. “Everyone must play a role in keeping food safe and fit for consumption.”
He also highlighted the importance of science in managing risks associated with microorganisms in food and called for stronger communication and practices to protect the food supply.
To raise awareness, the State Ministry of Health organized a public sensitisation walk, calling attention to the need for better hygiene, food handling, and preservation among sellers and consumers alike.
World Food Safety Day is observed globally every June 7 and serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that what we eat is safe and healthy. With this partnership, Plateau State joins other regions taking bold steps to tackle food safety challenges and promote public health through infrastructure and education.
