The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind Plateau State’s ambition to become a digital powerhouse, with a pledge to support transformative tech initiatives, including converting the historic Nigeria Standard building in Jos into a modern technology hub.
During a visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang in Jos, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy described Plateau as a key player in Nigeria’s digital future. He announced that Plateau would be among the first beneficiaries of a nationwide deployment of 7,000 telecom towers aimed at improving connectivity across the country.
As part of the collaboration, the federal government also plans to establish a “Talent City Project” in Plateau, designed to boost youth employment and digital innovation. The initiative will form part of broader efforts to drive inclusive tech growth and ensure Nigerian states contribute meaningfully to the national digital economy.
“This city is brimming with potential. We see Plateau as key to Nigeria’s digital future,” the Minister said, highlighting the state’s creative legacy and strategic value. He urged young people in Plateau to take full advantage of the ongoing 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme, which aims to equip Nigerians with digital skills relevant for global and local opportunities.
He stressed that digital connectivity is no longer a luxury, but a necessity in transforming vital sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and national security.
Governor Mutfwang welcomed the federal support, saying it aligned perfectly with his vision of building a smart Plateau and addressing complex challenges like border insecurity and economic stagnation through technology. He described the federal visit as timely and a “game-changer” for the state.
The collaboration marks a significant step in decentralizing Nigeria’s digital economy and investing in underserved regions. With plans to turn the Nigeria Standard building into a hub of innovation and technology, the initiative could position Jos as a regional centre for startups, tech training, and digital enterprise.
If successfully implemented, Plateau’s tech transformation could serve as a model for other states seeking to harness technology for inclusive development and youth empowerment
