The Lagos State Police Command has declared a total restriction of movement across the state from 3am to 3pm on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to ensure a peaceful and secure atmosphere for the Local Government Elections.
The ban, which affects all forms of vehicular movement on roads and waterways, was jointly agreed upon by security agencies under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). The restriction will cover all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, the force emphasized that only essential service vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol vehicles belonging to accredited ICCES agencies will be allowed during the restriction window.
Security escorts and armed aides are prohibited from accompanying VIPs to polling units or collation centers. Use of sirens and covered number plates near election areas is also banned. The police warned that violators will be arrested and prosecuted.
Emergency responders, accredited officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), election observers, and journalists on official duty are exempted, but only if they display valid LASIEC-issued identification tags. Anyone found without such tags will be detained and investigated.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, called for public cooperation and urged all eligible voters to conduct themselves peacefully. He also issued a strong warning to political thugs and their sponsors to stay away from election venues, stressing that security operatives will strictly enforce the law.
All 15 political parties participating in the elections have been urged to keep their supporters in check and avoid actions that could jeopardize the voting process. Parents and guardians are advised to discourage their wards from any acts of violence or voter intimidation.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities through police emergency lines: 08063299264 or 08065154338.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a secure, free, and credible election, thanking Lagosians in advance for their support and cooperation.
