The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has commended the recent tax reform bills signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, describing them as a significant relief for millions of low-income Nigerians who have long borne the weight of taxation despite modest earnings.
In a statement issued by the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Muhammed Shehu, the reforms were praised as a transformative development aimed at modernising Nigeria’s fiscal system, strengthening public revenue management, and reducing the country’s dependence on oil income.
Dr. Shehu explained that the tax reform bills—together with the new RMAFC bill—reflect President Tinubu’s commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s tax structure in a way that balances fairness with efficiency. He noted that the changes go beyond mere adjustments to existing laws. They are strategic measures designed to broaden the tax base, improve compliance, and promote more inclusive growth across economic sectors.
“These reforms are not just administrative changes; they are deliberate efforts aimed at modernising Nigeria’s tax system, strengthening compliance, and widening the tax base. Ultimately, this will promote inclusive economic growth across all sectors and reduce our over-reliance on oil revenue,” Dr. Shehu said.
He further stressed that the tax reforms will improve transparency and accountability in public financial management, laying the foundation for more sustainable national development. According to the Commission, these changes will help stimulate economic activity, create a more equitable taxation environment, and provide much-needed financial relief for low-income earners.
The Commission commended President Tinubu’s leadership for showing responsiveness to the economic struggles of ordinary Nigerians. Dr. Shehu described the reforms as both visionary and practical, addressing key structural issues that have hindered Nigeria’s revenue generation and fiscal stability.
“By signing these bills into law, President Tinubu has shown a deep understanding of the economic challenges faced by everyday Nigerians and has taken concrete action to address them,” he stated.
RMAFC also expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for its role in the legislative process. The Commission acknowledged the efforts of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Attorney General of the Federation Chief Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi SAN, and other policymakers who worked collectively to pass the reform bills.
Looking ahead, the Commission pledged its full support for the implementation of the new tax framework. It reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant government agencies to ensure that the benefits of the reforms such as improved revenue efficiency, fairer taxation, and broader economic inclusion are effectively delivered to Nigerians.
“These reforms represent a milestone in our national journey to diversify the economy and secure long-term prosperity for Nigerians,” Dr. Shehu concluded. “The Commission stands ready to support their full implementation for the benefit of all.”
