Sahara Foundation's Empowers Africa’s Next Generation Innovators
Share

The Sahara Group Foundation recently hosted the second edition of the Sahara STEAMers program, aimed at equipping participants with knowledge and skills to generate innovative solutions for various sectoral challenges. The program’s National Demo Day competition was organized to cultivate Africa’s future leaders and social innovators.

Established in 2022 as an afterschool initiative in collaboration with STEMCafe, the Sahara STEAMers program aims to foster excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education among secondary school students across Africa.

During this year’s edition, participants had the opportunity to present their innovative solutions to a panel of judges. Ejiro Gray, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, expressed profound pride in the students’ dedication, creativity, and passion. Gray emphasized that the 2023 edition showcased the students’ intelligence and their application of STEM learning to address real-world problems and invent innovative solutions, even for those experiencing their initial exposure to technology.

Gray extended congratulations to all participants, urging them to continue refining their acquired skills and leveraging them to drive positive societal change.

Judges praised the students for their confidence and ability to develop practical and viable solutions. The winning team, Team TechRats from Oshodi High School, presented a sustainable Automatic Wheelchair solution designed to enhance mobility for the elderly. Team Young Genius, also from Oshodi High School, secured second place with their innovative Domestic Drainage System. Finally, Team Spark from Igbobi Boys College claimed third place with their solution for a Home Power Management System.

The Sahara STEAMers program not only celebrates innovation but also empowers students to think critically and apply their knowledge to create meaningful solutions for real-world challenges.
