The Ogun State Government has entered discussions with Sahara Group to enhance electricity supply in Abeokuta, the state capital. This was announced by the Governor, who shared details of the partnership via his social media platforms.
According to the governor, the state recently hosted the Sahara Group delegation led by its Group Managing Director. The energy firm is collaborating with the state to develop a new distribution network that will increase power capacity from the current 13 megawatts to 34 megawatts. The proposed network will serve last-mile customers throughout the Abeokuta district.
As part of the engagement, the Sahara Group team visited key locations, including Oriomi, Okemosan the site of the proposed new substation and the Oyan Dam. The visits were part of a wider reconnaissance effort and preliminary field studies. While discussions around the Oyan Dam remain exploratory, the main focus of the visit was to demonstrate Sahara Group’s interest in building a robust power distribution framework for the state.
The initiative is a core component of the Ogun State Light Up Project, which seeks to improve
energy access across the state through strategic partnerships. The governor emphasized that Sahara Group has shown strong commitment to supporting the state’s energy goals and expressed optimism about the potential impact on local communities.
He described the meeting as a major step toward achieving sustainable power solutions and reaffirmed the state’s dedication to securing reliable energy infrastructure that would empower residents and boost economic development.
