In a renewed effort to strengthen agricultural productivity and ensure food security across Borno South Senatorial District, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has facilitated the distribution of 12,000 bags of fertiliser to farmers in the region.
The intervention, carried out through the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM), targets farmers across the district’s nine Local Government Areas, many of whom depend heavily on farming for their livelihoods. The official flag-off ceremony was held in Bayo Local Government Area, where the senator was represented by the former Deputy Governor of Borno State.
Describing the gesture as both timely and strategic, especially as the farming season enters its peak, Ndume reiterated his deep connection with the agricultural community. “I am a farmer myself, and I understand the challenges our people face. This initiative is to ensure that our hardworking farmers are not left behind due to lack of access to fertiliser,” he said.
He added that the intervention builds upon previous efforts such as the Ndume Sustainable Farming initiative established by his wife, and that future plans would focus more on irrigation farming to promote year-round agricultural activity in Borno South. Ndume emphasized that agriculture remains central to his legislative and development agenda for the district.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Bayo Local Government, represented by the Bayo APC Chairman, praised Senator Ndume’s consistent grassroots impact, especially at a time when input costs are rising. “Senator Ndume has done more than enough for us. At a time like this when farmers are grappling with high input costs, his intervention is a huge relief,” he said, while expressing confidence in the community’s continued support for the senator.
To ensure fairness and transparency in the fertiliser distribution, Adamu Timta, Chairman of the Distribution Committee, urged local coordinators to direct the inputs to genuine farmers across all wards. He also announced that a dedicated Monitoring Committee, led by Buba Tunga, is already stationed across the nine LGAs and will submit independent reports to guarantee accountability.
This latest move by Senator Ndume not only addresses urgent input shortages but also reinforces the importance of agriculture as a foundation for economic stability in the region. As preparations for the next phase begin, more farmers, particularly those focusing on irrigation are expected to benefit, signalling sustained support for agricultural development in Borno South.
