Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday inaugurated a $115 million upgrade at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Rivers State, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s maritime industry. The project reinforces APM Terminals’ commitment to Nigeria’s economic development and strengthens its position as a key trade hub in West Africa.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, represented by Professor Babatunde Bolaji Bernard; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola; Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, and the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority represented by Engr. Olalekan Badmus.
Speaking at the event, Shettima, represented by Musaddiq Mustapha, Personal Assistant to the President on Subnational Infrastructure, praised APM Terminals for its significant investment. He assured the company that the Federal Government would continue creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, emphasizing that the upgrade would enhance service delivery and attract more vessels to the port.
“Nigeria is a country of significant opportunities. APM Terminals’ investment in WACT demonstrates their commitment to developing ports crucial for global trade,” Shettima stated, adding that the government will maintain its long-term collaboration with the company.
The upgrade, which includes yard expansion, the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, and the construction of a modern office complex, is expected to improve efficiency at the port. The introduction of new Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC), Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTG), and advanced Cargo Handling Equipment (CHE) will reduce turnaround time and set new benchmarks for service delivery in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
