Sokoto State Government to Disburse ₦2.5 Billion to Small Business Owners

The Sokoto State government has announced plans to disburse an additional ₦2.5 billion to small business owners as part of efforts to boost productivity and make the state a commercial hub. Governor Ahmed Aliyu disclosed this during the flag-off ceremony for the NG-CARES Disbursement Day in Sokoto State.

Governor Aliyu highlighted the state’s commitment to supporting the business community, stating that arrangements are being finalized to enhance commercial activities across Sokoto and neighboring states. He revealed that 14,000 new beneficiaries would be enrolled, with over ₦2.5 billion earmarked for disbursement.

“Today marks another significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to bring relief, support, and empowerment to the people of Sokoto State,” Aliyu said. He noted that the NG-CARES (Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus) Program aims to address challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the state’s resolve to recover, rebuild, and restore livelihoods.

The governor explained that the NG-CARES program began operations in 2021 under the previous administration, with the Sokoto Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SOSMEDA) receiving ₦180 million, benefiting 810 individuals across the state. Under the current administration, SOSMEDA has received ₦1.5 billion, benefiting an estimated 8,590 individuals—a significant increase from the previous support program.

Aliyu emphasized that the resources being distributed are intended to mitigate the pandemic’s effects, particularly on the most affected small businesses, vulnerable households, and hardworking people of the state. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely to rebuild their businesses, support their families, and contribute to the economic and social well-being of their communities.

The governor also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and economic development, with plans to complete the reconstruction of the Sokoto Central Market, a key commercial center in the region.

As the state embarks on this new phase of economic recovery, Aliyu assured the people of Sokoto that this is just the beginning of many more successes to come, and he called for continued cooperation from all residents to ensure the program’s success.
