The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has recognized the quality and safety of 107 products produced by 44 companies in Anambra State. The certification was part of the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), an initiative aimed at ensuring that locally manufactured products meet national production standards. The ceremony, which took place at SON’s Anambra Office 1 in Awka on Thursday, saw companies awarded MANCAP certificates for new products, recertifications of existing products, and certifications for imported goods.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, SON’s Director-General, emphasized the importance of quality assurance in the local manufacturing sector. Represented by Mr. Chinedu Agafie, Director of the Anambra Regional Office, Dr. Okeke stated that the certification process not only ensures compliance with national standards but also enhances the competitiveness of Nigerian-made products in the global market. “The certification of locally manufactured products promotes quality awareness and guarantees that goods and services meet the expectations of both local and international consumers,” he said.
The Director-General also urged manufacturers to maintain high standards in their production processes. He stressed that sustaining and improving quality standards is crucial in today’s highly competitive business environment. “Quality is not just about meeting standards; it is about customer satisfaction, which drives continuous patronage and ultimately increases output and profitability. If you fail to deliver quality products, consumers will quickly turn to alternatives,” he warned.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo was also commended for creating a business-friendly environment in Anambra, which has been pivotal in fostering a thriving manufacturing sector. “We are grateful to Governor Soludo for his efforts in creating the enabling environment that promotes business activities in Anambra State,” said Dr. Okeke.
Mr. Emmanuel Husseni, the State Coordinator for SON’s Anambra Office 1, praised the companies for meeting the rigorous requirements for certification. He encouraged manufacturers to take advantage of SON’s calibration services to further enhance product quality and urged them to display the updated MANCAP certification logo on their products to demonstrate their commitment to high standards.
Representing the awardees, Mrs. Christiana Nwaele, Managing Director of Sylflora Industries and Farms, expressed gratitude to SON for helping build consumer confidence in locally made products. However, she raised concerns about the growing number of unregulated manufacturers operating outside of SON’s oversight, highlighting the potential risks posed to consumers and compliant businesses alike. She called for more stringent regulations to address this issue and ensure the safety and reliability of products in the market.
As Anambra State continues to be a hub for manufacturing excellence in Nigeria, this recognition of 44 companies serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to quality standards and the need for continuous improvement in the sector to compete both domestically and globally. The MANCAP certification is a crucial step towards enhancing the reputation of Nigerian-made products and promoting economic growth through high-quality manufacturing practices.
