The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has destroyed a large batch of substandard imported products; including tyres, electrical cables, steel doors, and spark plugs;that failed to meet Nigeria’s minimum safety and quality standards.
In a statement, the agency explained that the destruction aligns with its mandate under the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which empowers it to regulate and enforce standards to protect consumers and the market from unsafe goods.
The Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, emphasized that the use of high-quality products, especially tyres, is critical to road safety. He warned that tyres, regardless of whether they are new or used, expire after four years and can burst if used beyond their lifespan, leading to fatal road accidents.
He also pointed out that improper storage and exposure to extreme temperatures can degrade tyre quality. He encouraged consumers to report any substandard or suspicious products to SON offices nationwide or through the agency’s toll-free line.
“This is a clear demonstration of our resolve to rid the market of dangerous, unregulated goods that threaten the safety, health, and security of Nigerians,” said Okeke. “It is a strong warning to all stakeholders, from manufacturers to importers and retailers; that SON will not allow substandard goods to thrive in Nigeria.”
The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring only quality-assured products are allowed in the Nigerian market, calling on industry players to strictly adhere to set standards and regulations.
