Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusion and leadership development with the successful hosting of the third edition of its Banking Academy a flagship initiative designed to empower women in the financial services sector.
Held in Lagos, the event drew female professionals from across the banking industry for a day of mentorship, learning, and collaboration. The programme featured panel discussions, case studies, and leadership sessions focused on building confidence, enhancing technical capacity, and fostering innovation among women in finance.
Speaking at the event, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dalu Ajene, said the initiative reflects Standard Chartered’s belief in diversity as a driver of growth.
“Our goal is to create a pipeline of dynamic, visionary, and innovative women who will shape the future of banking in Africa,” Ajene said. “We believe inclusion is key to driving innovation and growth across the financial ecosystem.”
Head of Transaction Banking for Nigeria and West Africa, Ibiyemi Okuneye, described the Academy as a platform for transformation rather than just a training exercise.
“By equipping women with the right skills, confidence, and networks to thrive, we are not just preparing future leaders we are reshaping the financial landscape today,” she said.
Industry experts and executives from major institutions including TotalEnergies, Citibank, CFAO Nigeria, and First Bank participated as speakers and judges during the interactive sessions. Participants also presented case studies demonstrating problem-solving and leadership skills.
The initiative forms part of Standard Chartered’s wider commitment to female empowerment, alongside programmes such as the Women in Technology Incubator, which supports women entrepreneurs using technology to drive business growth.
With continuous support from partners like the International Chamber of Commerce (Nigeria Chapter) and the Association of Professional Women Bankers, the bank says it remains dedicated to nurturing women who will play pivotal roles in strengthening Nigeria’s banking and SME landscape.
