Substack is making a big move to attract video creators by introducing a feature that allows them to monetize their videos and publish directly from the Substack app. This update gives creators more control over their audience and earnings, positioning Substack as a strong platform for subscription-based video content.
Previously, videos could only be shared through Notes, Substack’s Twitter-style feed, which lacked paywall options and subscriber notifications. Now, creators can post videos as paid content, track performance metrics like views and subscriber growth, and estimate their revenue from paid sign-ups.
At the moment, videos can only be fully paywalled, but Substack plans to add a preview feature, allowing free subscribers to watch teasers before deciding to pay. The company is also developing improved editing tools and analytics to help creators maximize engagement and earnings.
Substack’s push into video appears to be working. Since expanding video capabilities in 2022, the company has seen that creators who use video and audio grow their revenue 2.5 times faster than those who don’t. As of February 2025, 82% of the platform’s highest-earning creators use these formats.
This latest move is part of a broader strategy to attract more content creators. Last month, Substack launched a $20 million Creator Accelerator Fund to help new creators transition to the platform. They also recently introduced livestreaming for all publishers, further expanding opportunities for audience engagement and monetization.
