The Conflict Research Society (CRS) has announced the call for applications for the 2025 Sydney Bailey Fund, a prestigious small research grant designed to support PhD students undertaking world-class research in peace, conflict, and cooperation studies.
The fund, established in 1995 by Professor Chris Mitchell, offers grants of up to £1,000 to help PhD researchers carry out critical fieldwork, data collection, or other research-related activities that are not funded by their institutions or other sources.

The CRS promotes cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research on conflict processes and peacebuilding. It provides a global platform for collaboration among academics, policymakers, and civil society organizations working to address complex challenges of conflict and cooperation.
Through the Sydney Bailey Fund, the CRS empowers PhD students to advance impactful research and share their findings with the global peace and conflict research community.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled as PhD students (of any nationality).
- Use the grant specifically for research activities, such as travel for fieldwork or data collection (not for conferences or equipment).
- Demonstrate that the activity lacks funding from their home institution or other grants.
- Preference may be given to PhD students who have participated in CRS conferences or events.
Benefits for Awardees
Selected awardees will:
- Receive up to £1,000 in research funding.
- Be invited to present their research at the CRS Annual Conference in September 2025.
- Publish a short research report and feature in a video or podcast on the CRS website.
- Submit a 1–2 minute field video describing their research, promoting future scholarship rounds.

Successful applicants will be notified within one month.
Important Notes
- The grant recipient must provide proof of university enrollment before disbursement.
- Research funds must be used by March 2026; otherwise, they will be returned to the CRS.
