TETFund Approves N2.5 Billion Intervention for Federal University of Transportation Daura
Share

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has approved over N2.5 billion in intervention funds for the Federal University of Transportation Daura (FUTD) in Katsina State, marking a significant boost for one of Nigeria’s newest specialised universities.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the bulk of the funds , N1.3 billion will go into physical infrastructure and programme upgrades. Academic staff training and development will receive N240 million, while N150 million is allocated to ICT support, N185 million to library development, and N170 million to staff conference attendance.

The breakdown also includes N100 million for research activities, N180 million for project maintenance, and N85.5 million for entrepreneurship centres. Career centres will receive N100 million, while journal publication and manuscript development were allocated N25 million each.

Beyond academic investments, the university is introducing a cooperative society to help staff acquire homes within five to ten years. The Vice Chancellor urged private investors to partner with the university in developing residential housing around the campus, stressing that the initiative will prevent staff from retiring without owning homes.

The Federal University of Transportation Daura was established to strengthen Nigeria’s transportation sector by producing skilled manpower and driving research in logistics, railways, and related fields. The TETFund intervention, he said, will position the institution to fulfil its mandate.

This funding comes under TETFund’s 2025 intervention cycle, which followed a record N1.6 trillion allocation earlier this year—the largest in the agency’s history. Generated from the 3% education tax on company profits, the funds are supporting infrastructure, healthcare training, renewable energy projects, and student support nationwide.

Out of the total allocation, universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education collectively received N460 billion, while N225 billion was released to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to strengthen the Federal Government’s student loan scheme. Additional funding has also been directed towards solar and gas-powered facilities, medical sciences training, and campus security upgrades.

Organisers say the intervention in FUTD reflects the government’s commitment to expanding educational capacity in critical sectors such as transportation, energy, and technology.
