Experts Sound Alarm on Rapid Decline of Small Businesses in Nigeria

In a dedicated effort to break the cycle of poverty and bridge the employment gap in Nigeria, The Leader Team, a nonprofit organization, has taken a step forward by offering empowerment and mentoring initiatives tailored for small-scale businesses.

Through this initiative, entrepreneurs receive asset grants designed to boost production, enhance efficiency, and generate more job opportunities.

William Karshima, representing The Leader Team in Nigeria and the United States, highlighted during the award ceremony in Abuja that the organization has empowered 44 businesses since 2022. He explained that every year, mentees undergo a rigorous seven-month leadership and business training program, equipping them with vital knowledge and skills like Financial Management, Strategic Planning, Growth Strategies, and Social Impact practices. Furthermore, they receive grants and access to growth-oriented opportunities.

“At the end of the program, mentees are expected to present a business plan outlining the requirements for taking their business to the next level,” Karshima emphasized. He also revealed that this year, a significant boost was provided to 25 small-scale businesses. The program, which commenced last year benefiting 19 small-scale business owners, is now concluding its activities for the year. The plan is to empower another 25 businesses in the coming year.

Shiloh Karishma, Executive Director of The Leaders Team, emphasized that with approximately 133 million Nigerians currently grappling with multidimensional poverty, the solution lies in empowering leaders with integrity and creating sustainable, long-term employment opportunities for all.

Karishma further explained that the organization extends its training and support to for-profit businesses aiming to amplify their social impact. Additionally, they collaborate and offer support to other organizations and NGOs making positive contributions in Nigeria. This holistic approach is geared towards fostering a brighter and more prosperous future for the nation’s business landscape.
