Unity Bank Plc is ramping up efforts to expand electronic payment adoption and financial inclusion across Nigeria through a strategic partnership with AfriGo, Nigeria’s domestic card scheme. The collaboration is focused on increasing card usage within Unity Bank’s large retail customer base, leveraging AfriGo’s locally developed payment infrastructure.
The renewed commitment was formalised during a strategic engagement between the leadership of both institutions. Unity Bank’s Managing Director and CEO said the bank is dedicated to positioning the AfriGo card as a primary tool for transactions. He described the card as a local innovation with the potential to transform Nigeria’s payment landscape, adding that Unity Bank will actively promote its usage across its network.
He also encouraged AfriGo to increase awareness efforts to strengthen public acceptance of the card.
AfriGo’s Managing Director praised Unity Bank for being among the top five adopters of the AfriGo card and highlighted the scheme’s growing role in fostering financial inclusion, especially in underserved areas. He pointed to AfriGo’s innovations—such as support for instant payments and offline functionality, as key to widening access to digital payments.
He also cited successful rollouts like Tap & Go, which have helped boost contactless payment adoption among commuters, businesses, and everyday users. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that Unity Bank’s reach can significantly drive the uptake of digital banking services across the country.
