The United States has announced a significant shift in its visa policy for Nigerian citizens, with immediate implementation. Most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians will now be limited to single entry and valid for only three months.
The update was disclosed in a press release from the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, which clarified that visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid and unaffected by the new rule.
According to the embassy, the change is part of a global visa reciprocity process aimed at aligning visa rules with international standards and protecting the integrity of the US immigration system. The policy review, which may include changes to visa entry limits and validity duration, is ongoing and subject to further adjustment.
The US cited several factors behind the decision, including the need for secure travel documentation, management of visa overstays, and improved information sharing with foreign governments. The embassy highlighted that the US Mission is actively engaging with Nigerian authorities to help the country meet these global benchmarks.
Despite the restrictions, the US stressed its continued partnership with Nigeria. The embassy acknowledged efforts by Nigerian immigration and security agencies to meet international best practices and encouraged travellers to respect visa conditions and ensure their documents are valid and accurate.
Reaffirming its diplomatic commitment, the embassy stated, “The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria via business, educational, and cultural exchanges.”
It also expressed confidence in ongoing cooperation with Nigerian government officials and citizens to promote safe, secure, and lawful travel.
