WACT Empowers Local Youth with Life-Changing Scholarships
Share

The West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Rivers State, is set to empower the first group of graduates from its scholarship program for the host communities of Onne and Ogu. This initiative launched three years ago, aims to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged youths in the region.

WACT’s Community Relations Manager, Justin Okwuofu, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that 100 students have benefited from the program so far, gaining access to university education and valuable skills for their future careers. He highlighted that some of these students have also received internships at WACT, offering them hands-on experience and potentially a pathway to employment at the company.

Okwuofu emphasized WACT’s dedication to the program, noting that the success stories from the graduates have been a source of inspiration. He also revealed plans to ensure the sustainability of the initiative by seeking partnerships with local businesses for internships and job placements for the scholarship recipients.

“Looking ahead, WACT is committed to deepening our engagement with the community. We plan to expand the scholarship to reach more students and are exploring vocational training and community outreach initiatives,” Okwuofu said.

One of the beneficiaries, Taribo Samuel from Ogu, expressed his gratitude to WACT. “The scholarship has lifted the financial burden off my shoulders, allowing me to focus on my studies. I believe this initiative is a way to hand over opportunities to the next generation,” he said.

Community leaders have also applauded WACT’s efforts. Sunday Dudu, Chairman of the Onne Community Development Committee, praised the program for easing students’ financial challenges and urged the company to consider employing some of the graduates. Similarly, Bara Thompson, Chairman of the Ogu Community Development Committee, acknowledged the positive impact WACT’s initiatives have had on their community.

WACT’s scholarship program continues to grow, empowering youths and fostering stronger ties with its host community.
