The Federal Government has greenlit the allocation of N5,128,180,623 for the funding of 185 successful research proposals in the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) National Research Fund 2023 grant cycle. The approval, conveyed by Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman, comes following the recommendation of the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.
The screening process, initiated in March 2023, involved rigorous evaluation of 4,287 Concept Notes submitted by applicants. The approved sum includes N3,784,635,923 for the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group, N759,875,400 for Humanities and Social Science, and N583,669,300.63 for Cross Cutting. Individual grants range from N8 million to over N46 million.
Among the approved research works, the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation thematic group includes projects such as the development of an Intelligent Multichamber Evaporative Cooling Preservative System for Post-Harvest Storage of Selected Fruits and the creation of an Electric Vehicle with Special Tracking Features.
Under the Cross-Cutting thematic group, projects like the Utilisation of Scrap Tires and Plastic Wastes for Renewable Energy Storage Systems and the Development of Appropriate Technology for Aluminum Alloy Sacrificial Anodes in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry received approval.
The Humanities and Social Science category features projects like Digital Financial Inclusion, Rural Households’ Consumption Structure and Well-being in Nigeria, and efforts to mitigate Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Frontline Nigerian Army Personnel using Stress Inoculation Therapy. These research initiatives aim to contribute significantly to various fields and sectors within the country.
