Nigerian Government and FGN Power Company Sign $118 Million Contract to Boost Nigeria’s Power Distribution

In a significant advancement for Nigeria’s power sector, the Federal Government and FGN Power Company (FGNPC) have signed a $118,148,469.72 contract to fund the construction and rehabilitation of over 2,670 kilometers of power distribution lines across the country. This project includes the development of 33kV, 11kV, and 400V circuits, aiming to enhance power delivery to residential, commercial, and industrial areas nationwide.

 

 Key Highlights of the Project

 

Comprehensive Distribution Network Upgrade

– New Lines Construction: 687 kilometers

– Existing Lines Rehabilitation: 1,983 kilometers

– The project will involve strategic collaborations with Enugu and Benin Distribution Companies (DisCos) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ensure adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.

 

Strategic Partnerships

Lead Partners: Elsewedy Electric and Power China

Technological Support: Siemens (excluded from distribution specialization)

 

 Remarks from Key Officials

 

Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power:

Emphasized the project’s role in securing efficient power delivery across Nigeria.

He highlighted the collaboration with Elsewedy Electric and Power China as pivotal for achieving the project’s goals.

 

Mr. Kenny Anuwe, Managing Director, FGNPC Stressed the strategic importance of partnering with Elsewedy and Power China, noting their proven track record and expertise.

He explained the choice of Elsewedy over Siemens for distribution lines due to Elsewedy’s specialization and success in similar projects in Egypt.

 

Mr. Islam Isharawy, Country Manager, Elsewedy Electric, Expressed pride in contributing to Nigeria’s energy infrastructure upgrade.

 

Mr. Tino Dong, Vice President for Central and West Africa, Power China Reaffirmed Power China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s power sector vision and delivering reliable power solutions.

 Reliable and Sustainable Electricity Supply

– The initiative aligns with ongoing mid-stream transmission projects to ensure consistent power delivery.

 

 Infrastructure Modernization

– Aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and enhancing the overall efficiency of Nigeria’s power distribution network.

 

Socio-Economic Benefits

– Expected to boost residential, commercial, and industrial power supply, contributing to broader socio-economic development.

 

The signing of this contract marks a pivotal step in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its power infrastructure. The collaboration between the Federal Government, FGNPC, Elsewedy Electric, and Power China is poised to significantly enhance the country’s power distribution capabilities, ensuring a more reliable and efficient electricity supply for all Nigerians.
