A non-governmental organization, Illuminating Minds, in partnership with Global Health Systems Solutions (GHSS), has launched the Women Entrepreneurship Empowerment Program (WEEP) to directly empower approximately 70 unemployed youths, primarily women, in Bayelsa State through entrepreneurship and employability skills development.
Dr. Itari Turner, Team Lead at Illuminating Minds, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We are excited to partner with GHSS on this vital initiative. Empowering young women and youth through entrepreneurship is a key step towards reducing unemployment and fostering economic resilience in Bayelsa State. WEEP will provide participants with the tools and confidence to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and become agents of change in their communities.”
Professor Patrick Njukeng, Executive Director and CEO of GHSS, expressed optimism about the project during a stakeholder consultative meeting. He urged young people in the communities to engage with the program, saying, “Young people, come to us, be open-minded, give us a chance to guide you to kickstart a community activity that can be beneficial to you. We are here to sow a seed that will be beneficial to you, and we are here to see this seed grow, mature, and bear fruits and produce more seeds for you.”
The WEEP initiative is designed to tackle the high youth unemployment and economic challenges faced by women in the Niger Delta. It will offer comprehensive support, including vocational training in various trades and crafts, mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and professionals, and grants to help participants start or expand businesses. The goal is to equip participants with the skills and resources needed to create sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
The organizations behind WEEP are committed to promoting inclusion and supporting underserved communities to bridge the widening poverty gap. They believe that this pilot program will serve as a catalyst for change, advancing gender equality and economic empowerment in Ogbia local government area and the broader Niger Delta region.
