The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) fell by 13.3% in January 2025, dropping to ₦16,250 from ₦18,750 in December 2024. The price per kilogram also declined from ₦1,500 to ₦1,300, with checks revealing variations between ₦1,250 and ₦1,400 across different gas plants.
Mr. Olatunbosun Oladapo, National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), attributed the price drop to increased local production and stable supply. He emphasized that over 70% of Nigeria’s LPG consumption now comes from domestic sources, reducing reliance on imports and supporting affordability.
“As an association, we are advocating for full adoption of LPG for cooking, and affordability is key to achieving this,” Oladapo stated. He noted that the government’s interventions have helped stabilize prices, ensuring supply meets demand.
Addressing concerns over price variations, Oladapo condemned excessive charges by some gas plants. “There are plants selling at ₦1,250, with the highest at ₦1,300. Any plant charging ₦1,400 is extorting Nigerians,” he said, stressing the need for transparency and competition to drive prices down further.
With stable supply and increasing local production, LPG prices are expected to remain affordable, making clean cooking energy more accessible to Nigerians.
