Neuralink, the brain-computer interface (BCI) company founded by Elon Musk, is recruiting volunteers worldwide to participate in its innovative research. The focus of the study is a brain implant that allows individuals to control computers simply by using their thoughts. Specifically, Neuralink is targeting individuals with quadriplegia—a condition causing paralysis in all four limbs—and inviting them to join its patient database.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) this Tuesday, the company announced the launch of its global Neuralink Patient Registry, making it accessible to participants from around the world. The company is seeking participants to explore new ways of interacting with digital devices through neural signals.
The ongoing PRIME Study, which evaluates the safety and functionality of Neuralink’s implant, is particularly focused on individuals with cervical spinal cord injuries or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), both of which cause severe impairments in hand function. Neuralink aims to test whether its implant can restore the ability to control digital devices by interpreting brain signals.
So far, Neuralink has successfully implanted its device in three patients. The company, which is competing with other firms such as Synchron and Precision Neuroscience, is developing technology designed to restore mobility and communication for people with neurological conditions. Musk has expressed his broader vision for the technology, hinting at potential future advancements that could integrate human cognitive abilities with artificial intelligence.
Founded in 2017, Neuralink is focused on creating devices that interpret signals from the brain. Its implant, which contains over 1,000 electrodes, is designed to target individual neurons, offering greater precision than other devices on the market that often focus on groups of neurons. This innovation could potentially allow for a higher degree of control and functionality for individuals using the device.
Musk’s Neuralink initiative is part of his broader portfolio, which includes other ventures like his involvement in government efficiency projects in collaboration with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
