The British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) Foundation has launched a new maize micro-enterprise initiative in Oke-Ako, Ekiti State, as part of efforts to empower smallholder farmers and strengthen food security systems in Nigeria.
Launched in collaboration with SwagCo and Odu’a Investment Company on June 17, the “Sustainable Development of Maize Micro-Enterprise Farmers Project” aims to support over 100 maize farmers across Ekiti State with high-yield seed varieties, climate-smart farming techniques, agronomic training, and access to viable markets.
The General Manager of BATN Foundation, Oludare Odusanya, described the programme as a “transformative journey” built around the goal of increasing productivity and improving livelihoods through sustainable agricultural practices. “We believe smallholder farmers are not just beneficiaries of development but drivers of it,” he said.
Representing the Ekiti State Governor, the Chief of Staff, Niyi Adebayo, said the project aligns with the state’s broader strategy for agricultural-led economic transformation. He assured stakeholders that Ekiti is open for investments and partnerships that prioritise farmers and ensure long-term food system resilience.
Under the initiative, participating farmers will receive improved, climate-resilient maize seeds and training on sustainable practices, with access to regular extension services. According to Odusanya, SwagCo played a key role in developing the project framework, while Westlink will act as the on-ground delivery partner. He also applauded Odu’a Investment Company for its contribution to advancing regional agricultural development.
“This collaboration is a testament to what is possible when the public sector, private enterprise, and development organisations work hand-in-hand,” Odusanya said. “Together, we are sowing seeds of transformation.”
The Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company, Abdulrahman Yinusa, and the Chairman of SwagCo, Owolabi Salami, also pledged sustained commitment to inclusive agribusiness, stating that the project holds promise for long-term impact in the South-West.
Other notable attendees at the event included Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ebenezer Boluade; Independent Director at Odu’a Investment Company and Technical Committee Member at BATNF, Folusho Olaniyan; Managing Director of SwagCo, Adewale Onadeko; BATNF Project Manager, Adetola Oniyelu; and the Regent of Oke-Ako, Tinuade Adebayo.
The regent welcomed the initiative, calling it a lifeline that aligns with the community’s development goals and pledging the town’s full support for its success.
The launch concluded with the symbolic distribution of starter packs and the official kickoff of field activities. BATN Foundation stated that the initiative is expected to expand over the coming years, creating more opportunities for youth participation, farmer-led enterprises, and inclusive rural development.
