The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across various parts of Nigeria from Monday, July 7, to Wednesday, July 10, 2025. The three-day forecast, released Sunday in Abuja, outlines weather patterns expected to impact both northern and southern regions of the country, with serious implications for residents and business owners, especially Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that rely on mobility, logistics, or open-air operations.
Weather Outlook by Region
Northern States:
NiMet projects that thunderstorms will begin on Monday morning in parts of Taraba and Adamawa. Later in the day, storms are expected in Zamfara, Adamawa, Kebbi, Taraba, and Kaduna.
On Tuesday, northern states will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning. However, isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely later in the day in Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Adamawa.
By Wednesday morning, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, and Gombe will face thunderstorms, with continued rainfall expected over Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and Zamfara in the afternoon and evening.
Southern States:
Morning cloud cover will dominate coastal areas like Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa on Monday, with heavier rain showers predicted later in the day in Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Abia, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and the wider coastline.
Tuesday will bring early morning rainfall to Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom, followed by extensive rains across Ekiti, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Lagos.
Similar conditions will persist on Wednesday, beginning with cloudy skies and progressing into widespread rain showers across the entire southern region.
North-Central Region:
The outlook for North-Central Nigeria indicates partly cloudy mornings, followed by thunderstorms later in the day throughout the forecast period.
On Monday, isolated thunderstorms and rain are expected in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa.
This pattern will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, with thunderstorms predicted across FCT, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Niger.
Precautionary Guidelines for Residents and Businesses
NiMet has called on Nigerians to be cautious during this period, particularly in areas susceptible to severe thunderstorms. “Strong winds may precede rainfall events,” the agency noted, urging residents to secure loose objects to avoid damage or injury.
The agency also advised people to unplug electrical appliances during heavy rain, avoid sheltering under trees, and steer clear of driving during intense downpours to prevent accidents.
For MSMEs, especially in the transportation, agriculture, informal retail, and delivery sectors, NiMet’s advisory is especially critical. Weather disruptions can affect supply chains, stall business operations, and pose safety risks to both customers and staff.
Airline operators are urged to obtain up-to-date, airport-specific weather forecasts and flight documentation from NiMet to ensure safe air travel.
