WAPA Partners With Women-Led NGOs to Promote Safety for Workplaces, Markets

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has held an interactive session with women-focused NGOs to tackle rising safety concerns in homes and public spaces—critical environments where many women-run small businesses and informal trade activities thrive.

Themed, “Homes and Public Places Safety: An Essential Way of Life,”  the event took place at the Women Development Centre in Agege. It brought together a wide range of stakeholders including health professionals, advocacy groups, and community leaders to discuss practical strategies for improving personal and public safety, especially for women, children, and micro-entrepreneurs operating in markets, schools, and transit areas.

Speaking at the gathering, the Honourable Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, stressed that safety is not only a personal responsibility but also a crucial pillar of economic stability and community development. She noted that without safe environments, many women entrepreneurs face daily risks that hinder their ability to operate successfully.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Oluwatosin Sobola of the Lagos State Safety Commission urged families and small business owners to adopt proactive safety habits. She advised attendees to keep emergency numbers handy, remain vigilant in their surroundings, and embed safety protocols into both their homes and workplaces.

Participants highlighted the urgent need for improved public lighting, increased community policing, and stronger collaboration between government agencies and grassroots organisations to protect vulnerable populations.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to women’s safety and economic empowerment. She commended ongoing policies and local engagement efforts aimed at creating safer spaces for women across the state.

The session concluded with a fire safety demonstration led by officials from the Lagos State Fire Service. The drill provided practical safety tips tailored to small business operators and NGOs, with an emphasis on emergency preparedness and fire prevention in market areas and crowded neighbourhoods.
