MTN, Microsoft Empower 1,250 Staff with Cloud Skills Across Africa
Share

MTN Group has deepened its partnership with Microsoft by certifying more than 1,250 employees in cloud technologies, the highest number of certifications achieved by any Microsoft customer in Africa.

The milestone was delivered through Microsoft’s Enterprise Skills Initiative (ESI) as part of MTN’s Project Nephos, its cloud strategy launched in 2022. The initiative aims to build enterprise-wide skills in cloud technologies, improve operational efficiency, and drive innovation across MTN’s markets.

According to MTN, the certifications covered areas such as Azure Fundamentals, Apps and Infrastructure, Data and AI, Security, DevSecOps, and Data Management. The training also reached staff from MTN Nigeria, MTN South Africa, and other operating companies, including its digital infrastructure business Bayobab, its fintech arm, and Chenosis, its API marketplace.

Group Chief Information Officer, Nikos Angelopoulos, said the pace of progress had been “remarkable,” noting that the certifications are already strengthening technical depth and supporting digital transformation within the company.

Account Director at Microsoft, Alkis Flemetakis, described the partnership as “an important enabler” of MTN’s long-term ambition of building digital platforms to power Africa’s transformation.

MTN said it plans to expand the programme to cover advanced certifications in artificial intelligence, security, and modern workplace solutions, reinforcing its transition to a cloud-native, platform-led organisation.
