Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) says it has integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) across its operations to strengthen domestic gas supply, enhance exports, and reduce operational costs.
The company’s Deputy Managing Director, Olakunle Osobu, disclosed this at the Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Milan, Italy, where over 50,000 participants from 150 countries gathered to discuss innovations in gas, LNG, hydrogen, and climate technologies.
Speaking during a panel session themed “Operational Excellence Through the Application of Artificial Intelligence Technologies,” Osobu explained that NLNG’s use of AI was driven by the scale and complexity of its operations.
“With over 10,000 operators and technicians working simultaneously towards a common goal, the use of AI is not only imperative but compulsory,” he said.
He noted that AI has been embedded in safety protocols, equipment performance, and workforce training, resulting in shorter training cycles, improved productivity, and greater efficiency. According to him, operator training that once took six to 12 months can now be completed in two to three months with the help of AI-driven visual tools.
Also speaking, NLNG’s Senior Mechanical Engineer for Static Equipment, Jude Ohanyere, said the company was carrying out life-extension assessments for key assets such as the Main Cryogenic Heat Exchanger (MCHE). He explained that partnerships with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) were helping ensure long-term reliability and supply commitments.
The development underscores how energy firms are increasingly turning to digital tools like AI to improve reliability, cut costs, and strengthen domestic supply.
