DHL Launches Exporters of the Year Awards to Empower African SMEs in Global Trade
Share

DHL has unveiled the first-ever Exporters of the Year Awards across Sub-Saharan Africa, a new initiative designed to celebrate the achievements of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) driving trade, innovation, and economic growth across the region.

The awards, part of DHL’s wider GoTrade program, seek to recognise SMEs that have excelled in cross-border trade while championing sustainability and best practices in international commerce. Through GoTrade, DHL supports entrepreneurs by addressing key barriers such as access to finance, logistics, training, and ICT; empowering them to compete globally and scale sustainably.

Open to formally registered SMEs with 25 or fewer full-time employees, the awards target businesses that have traded goods or products across borders for at least 12 months, operate sustainably, and comply with international trade regulations. By setting these criteria, DHL aims to spotlight SMEs that not only contribute to economic growth but also model the standards needed to succeed in global markets

“SMEs are the backbone of societies and the driving force behind sustainable economic growth. With these awards under the GoTrade banner, we aim to celebrate their impact, advocate for their participation in the global marketplace, and amplify the incredible work they do,” said the CEO of DHL Express Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Exporters of the Year Awards will feature three main categories. The ESG Excellence Exporter Award will honour SMEs demonstrating outstanding commitment to sustainability, ethical governance, and social responsibility. The Women Exporter of the Year Award will celebrate women-led businesses showing leadership, innovation, and success in expanding into global markets. Meanwhile, the Global Expansion Exporter Award will recognise SMEs that have achieved significant growth through increased participation in international trade.

For Africa’s SME community, this initiative signals more than just recognition, it represents a pathway to visibility, credibility, and growth in global markets. As international trade becomes increasingly competitive, platforms like DHL’s awards provide vital opportunities for small businesses to showcase their contributions, attract partnerships, and scale their operations beyond borders.
