Imo State is accelerating grassroots entrepreneurship with its One Kindred One Business Initiative (OKOBI), officially enlisting 104 new communities in the last few weeks. Since the programme’s launch less than 24 months ago, OKOBI has registered over 500 community-owned businesses, engaging 20,000 associates and creating sustainable jobs in both rural and urban areas.
The initiative, approved by Governor Hope Uzodimma, aims to alleviate poverty, strengthen local economies, and develop community-based enterprises across the state’s 630 autonomous communities. By pooling local talent and resources, the programme encourages communities to own and manage businesses collectively, driving inclusive economic growth.
Chief Economic Adviser to the governor, Prof. Kenneth Amaeshi, explained that the latest batch of communities responded enthusiastically to the government’s call for engagement. “These communities have embraced the free offer to launch local businesses. Participants are now refining their ideas into bankable proposals that can attract funding and generate sustainable employment,” he said.
The programme ensures that communities move beyond conceptual planning. Through training, mentorship, and structured support, participants develop skills to operate viable enterprises that serve local needs while generating income. A complete list of the newly enlisted communities has been published on the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser’s website, allowing residents to confirm participation.
Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment, emphasized the importance of public awareness and continuity. “The Office pledges to keep communities updated on the programme’s progress and encourages other groups to join future rounds. OKOBI is not just about starting businesses it’s about creating a culture of entrepreneurship, fostering self-reliance, and ensuring that local talent translates into tangible economic impact,” he said.
With the second phase underway, the initiative is expected to turn community ideas into operational businesses, empower more youth and women, and strengthen the state’s MSME ecosystem. By focusing on group ownership, capacity-building, and strategic support, OKOBI continues to generate employment, reduce poverty, and unlock opportunities for thousands across Imo State
