Women in Energy Network Empowers Young Girls with STEM and Energy Skills Across Nigeria
Share

The Women in Energy Network (WIEN) has intensified efforts to prepare young Nigerian girls for careers in the country’s energy sector, organizers said at the network’s 2025 Annual General Meeting in Lagos on Tuesday.

The initiative includes mentorship programs, skills development sessions, and career talks designed to introduce girls to opportunities in STEM and energy industries. WIEN’s president, Eyono Fatayi-Williams, said the programs aim to make energy and STEM careers more accessible.

In one of the group’s key activities, WIEN partnered with Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) in Port Harcourt to host a ‘Girls in STEM Career Fair,’ involving students from five government secondary schools. The event offered mentorship, interactive sessions, and exposure to female professionals in energy-related roles.

The network also runs the Collegiate Mentorship Programme, launched in 2024, which provides students and young women with practical skills and training in research, data analysis, and digital tools. Recent sessions included a research-focused webinar and a two-day Microsoft Excel masterclass.

WIEN has additionally formed partnerships to support women-led businesses, including a collaboration with eTranzact International Plc, providing discounted rates for FIRS e-invoicing solutions. The move aims to help women entrepreneurs improve digital compliance and business efficiency.

Fatayi-Williams emphasized that the programs target long-term capacity building for women in energy, noting that the network seeks to develop a pipeline of future leaders while increasing female representation in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
