Anambra State Grants Interim Electricity License to First Power to Distribute Electricity in State

The Anambra State government, through the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC), has issued a one-year interim license to First Power Electricity Company Limited to operate as an electricity distributor in the state.

Prof. Frank Okafor, ASERC Chairman and CEO, described the move as part of efforts to ensure steady power supply across Anambra. He said the government, under Governor Chukwuma Soludo, aims to make the state an attractive destination, a goal that cannot be achieved if electricity remains a luxury.

“With the issuance of this temporary license, we anticipate improved electricity distribution while maintaining strict oversight of the company’s activities to ensure targets are met,” Okafor said.

Okafor recalled that the establishment of ASERC began with Governor Soludo inaugurating five commissioners on October 9, 2025. Following this, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Anambra to ASERC. The commission then resolved to issue interim licenses to companies already operating under NERC licenses, legalizing their operations under the state framework.

First Power, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), is among the first beneficiaries. Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, representing EEDC’s Group Managing Director, said the license marks a key step in creating a dynamic and competitive electricity market in the state.

“First Power is fully aligned with the state’s development goals. Our plans are structured to support industrialization, urban growth, agriculture, and SME competitiveness. We are committed to operating under ASERC’s framework while upholding service excellence, safety, and environmental standards,” Mupwaya said.

The certificate issuance ceremony was attended by state officials, including the Commissioners for Information and Power and Water Resources.
