The Seeding the Future Global Food System Challenge 2025 is officially open for applications. Hosted by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and funded by the Seeding The Future Foundation (STF), this global competition supports transformative, scalable, and science-driven solutions that can reshape the global food system to become healthier, more sustainable, and more resilient. Since its launch in 2021, the Challenge has attracted more than 3,500 submissions from over 100 countries, representing universities, research organizations, nonprofits, and early-stage enterprises. Each year, it awards up to $1 million to innovators working at the intersection of nutrition, sustainability, and equitable food access.

About the Challenge
The Seeding the Future Global Food System Challenge seeks bold, high-impact solutions that address the most pressing issues in today’s food ecosystem. The program focuses on envisioning a future where everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sustainably produced food without exceeding planetary boundaries.
The Challenge encourages collaborative approaches involving researchers, entrepreneurs, NGOs, food scientists, social enterprises, and interdisciplinary teams committed to rethinking how food is grown, distributed, and consumed. By supporting early-stage innovations, it aims to accelerate breakthrough ideas that can influence global food security and long-term environmental health.

Global food systems are under severe strain, from climate change to resource depletion, nutrition gaps, and rising inequality. These challenges require bold, science-backed innovations that can improve food security while protecting the planet.

Funding and Awards
Projects that show strong innovation, feasibility, and potential for scale will receive up to US$25,000 in funding.
In total, the Challenge awards up to $1 million annually across multiple award tiers, supporting solutions at different stages of development—from concept to pilot and scale-ready models. Selected teams also gain access to global visibility, technical networks, and additional collaboration opportunities.

Focus Areas
The Challenge supports solutions operating within the program’s Innovation Focus Area, which sits at the intersection of three domains:

Safe and Nutritious Food for a Healthy Diet
Solutions that improve access to safe, nutrient-rich, and affordable food options.

Sustainable and Regenerative Food Systems
Innovations that promote environmental stewardship, reduce food waste and loss, strengthen circular systems, and conserve natural resources.

Equitable Access to Food
Projects ensuring that food is accessible, trusted, culturally appropriate, and appealing to all communities.

Together, these focus areas support a broader food policy ecosystem centered on sustainability, health, and equity.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
• Be a registered organization capable of managing grant funds
• Demonstrate clear capacity to execute innovative solutions
• Present a project with measurable impact, strong scientific grounding, and clear potential for scalability
• Align their proposal with at least one of the core focus areas
• Submit a complete application before the deadline

Who Can Apply
The Challenge welcomes submissions from:
• Nonprofit organizations
• Academic and research institutions
Individual applicants cannot apply; however, teams of students, scientists, and innovators may submit proposals through their affiliated institution. Cross-sector partnerships—including those involving academia, NGOs, and industry, are strongly encouraged.
