The European Union-funded SUSTAIN programme has launched a skilled labour mobility initiative aimed at connecting young Nigerian professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with career opportunities in Europe.
Implemented by Seefar and co-funded by the EU through ICMPD’s Migration Partnership Facility, the programme facilitates talent and knowledge exchange between Nigeria, Germany, and Ireland. Up to 240 participants will be selected to take part and matched with STEM jobs abroad, receiving comprehensive preparatory training that includes soft skills, cultural orientation, and career guidance to ensure smooth integration into European workplaces.
Emeka Anene, SUSTAIN Manager in Abuja, said the initiative “gives talented Nigerian STEM professionals a unique opportunity to gain valuable international experience in Europe, while ensuring their skills ultimately benefit Nigeria.” He emphasised that the programme drives long-term knowledge transfer and economic growth back home.
Oleg Chirita, Head of Global Initiatives and Deputy Head of ICMPD Brussels Mission, highlighted that programmes like SUSTAIN meet real labour market needs in Europe while empowering young professionals and strengthening economic ties. With Europe facing a shortage of nearly two million STEM professionals, the initiative provides a strategic solution for both regions.
SUSTAIN offers a triple-win partnership: Europe gains skilled professionals who can contribute immediately to innovation, Nigeria benefits from knowledge transfer and stronger trade connections, and participants acquire skills and international exposure that can be leveraged at home.
Seefar, a social enterprise with over a decade of experience in migration and reintegration projects, leads the programme with EU support, aiming to foster sustainable economic growth and mutually beneficial talent partnerships between Nigeria and Europe. Eligible candidates can apply directly through the SUSTAIN website.
