The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), has empowered 100 elderly persons with disabilities and elderly caregivers of children with disabilities through financial assistance and medical support.
The intervention, delivered under LASODA’s annual Cash Support and Medical Outreach Programme, is aimed at improving the welfare, dignity and economic resilience of vulnerable senior citizens across the state.
Beneficiaries drawn from different parts of Lagos received direct cash support alongside access to basic medical services during the programme held at the LASODA premises in Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, said the initiative was designed to promote inclusion, social protection and economic empowerment for elderly persons living with disabilities.
“At LASODA, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Our goal is to build a Lagos where every resident, including senior citizens with disabilities, can participate fully and meaningfully in society,” she said.
Oyetunde-Lawal explained that the financial support was structured to go beyond welfare, noting that beneficiaries could use the funds to meet personal needs, access healthcare, improve mobility or support small livelihood activities.
“This intervention is not merely about giving. It is about empowering our elderly citizens to live dignified, productive lives and maintain a degree of economic independence,” she added.
She reaffirmed LASODA’s commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and strengthening programmes that support their full integration into society, particularly as they age.
Several beneficiaries described the support as timely, noting that the cash assistance and medical services would ease daily challenges and help improve their quality of life.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen inclusive social interventions and ensure that vulnerable groups are not excluded from economic and social development.
