Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State has flagged off a community-based nutrition programme aimed at addressing malnutrition and strengthening public health outcomes at the grassroots level.
The Executive Chairman of the council said the initiative is a timely response to nutrition-related challenges within the community, noting that malnutrition remains a major public health concern with long-term social and economic consequences if left unaddressed. According to him, the programme reflects the council’s commitment to preventive healthcare and early intervention at the community level.
The initiative is being implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Health Emergency Initiative and the Nigerian Exchange Group. The partnership is designed to combine technical expertise, community outreach and institutional support to improve nutrition awareness and access to basic health services within the local government area.
The programme will be carried out in District I of Alimosho Local Government, with a focus on vulnerable households and caregivers who play a critical role in nutrition and health decisions at the family level. About 120 participants are expected to benefit directly from the intervention during the first phase.
Activities under the programme include nutritional screening, targeted nutrition support, health education for caregivers and referrals to appropriate health facilities where further care is required. The council said these components are designed to support early detection and management of malnutrition while promoting healthier nutrition practices within the community.
The chairman described the initiative as a proactive approach that prioritises prevention, education, and timely response, stressing that improving nutrition outcomes is essential to building healthier and more productive communities.
He added that the local government would continue to work with partners and stakeholders to expand similar interventions across other districts, as part of broader efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve the overall wellbeing of residents.
