In a groundbreaking move, Abia State has disbursed over N5.9 billion to benefit 66,000 residents, with 6,500 small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) receiving grants under the Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) Program. The initiative, a first of its kind in the Southeast, focuses on aiding individuals and businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At an appreciation rally held at the Government House, Umuahia, beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the relief, emphasizing its significance in supporting the state’s SMEs. The grants, approved by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, consist of Matching and Operational Support grants for 5,000 SMEs ranging from N100,000 to N1,000,000, and IT Enhancement Grants for 1,500 Abians, providing resources such as laptops, solar panels, and POS machines across the state’s 17 local government areas.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Multilateral Donor Agencies Coordination, Mr. Odinakachi Eric Eme, highlighted the unique nature of the program, stating that the funds directly come from the state, awaiting reimbursement upon proper execution. The Abia State House of Assembly, through Majority Leader Hon. Uchenna Okoro, fully endorsed and actively oversees the NG-CARES program, ensuring transparency and merit-based beneficiary selection.
Emphasizing their commitment, Majority Leader Okoro revealed legislative plans to further support SMEs and the digital economy, aligning with Governor Otti’s vision for Abia’s rapid economic empowerment and growth.
