AREAi Empowers MSMEs Through Digital Skills for Women, Youth
Share

The Aid for Rural Education Access Initiative (AREAi) is empowering Nigeria’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by equipping underserved women, youth, and children with digital and foundational skills that foster entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic inclusion.

Through its FastTrack Program, AREAi provides out-of-school children with foundational literacy and numeracy, preparing them for future entrepreneurship or vocational training. The initiative targets children in underserved rural communities, helping them build the skills and confidence needed to become active contributors to the economy.

Complementing this effort, the organisation’s Digital Skills Accelerator (DSA) trains women and girls in ICT and digital enterprise, enabling them to create and scale businesses in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy. The programme focuses on equipping participants with practical knowledge in areas such as online marketing, digital communication, and financial technology, allowing them to compete effectively in both local and global markets.

The Executive Director of AREAi, Gideon Olanrewaju, said the organisation’s mission is rooted in the belief that education and technology are vital to breaking cycles of poverty and driving sustainable economic growth. “Our goal is to ensure that every learner, regardless of background or geography, has access to the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in today’s digital economy,” he noted.

By extending education and digital training to rural areas and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, AREAi is nurturing a new generation of skilled individuals ready to power the nation’s MSME landscape. Its approach bridges the gap between learning and enterprise, ensuring that beneficiaries can translate knowledge into income-generating ventures.

The initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by promoting inclusive growth and creating pathways for self-reliance. Through ongoing partnerships with government agencies, private sector actors, and development partners, AREAi continues to expand its reach across Nigeria, connecting education with enterprise development for long-term impact.

As Nigeria’s MSME sector continues to evolve, AREAi’s work underscores the critical role of digital literacy and inclusive education in shaping resilient businesses and empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs.
