The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), in partnership with Meta and Deloitte, has launched AKILI AI, an artificial intelligence-powered platform designed to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Africa. The initiative aims to provide businesses with the digital tools needed to overcome common barriers such as limited access to finance, market challenges, and inadequate advisory support.
AKILI AI integrates Meta’s Llama Open Source AI model alongside other advanced technologies to equip African entrepreneurs with resources to drive business growth, enhance market access, and promote sustainable development. The platform is expected to play a crucial role in fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, including governments, development agencies, and international organizations, to scale its impact.
AUDA-NEPAD CEO Ms. Nardos Bekele-Thomas described the launch as a major step toward empowering African entrepreneurs.
“The launch of AKILI AI marks a significant milestone in our journey towards empowering African entrepreneurs. By leveraging AI, we are providing MSMEs with the tools they need to overcome challenges and drive sustainable development. This platform is a testament to our commitment to innovation and inclusive growth,” she said.
Bekele-Thomas also highlighted the importance of the partnership with Meta and Deloitte, noting that the initiative showcases the potential of AI-driven solutions in addressing real-world business challenges.
Kojo Boakye, Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye at Meta, reiterated the company’s commitment to using AI to unlock Africa’s entrepreneurial potential.
“The launch of AKILI AI marks a significant milestone in our mission to democratize access to cutting-edge technology and unlock Africa’s entrepreneurial potential. Leveraging the power of Meta’s Llama Open Source AI model, we are equipping MSMEs with the tools and resources necessary to drive innovation, create jobs, and build a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Africans,” Boakye said.
As Africa’s MSME sector continues to expand, digital tools such as AKILI AI are expected to help businesses navigate challenges and accelerate growth, reinforcing the role of AI in shaping the continent’s economic future.
