The Bangladesh High Commissioner to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, has said that relations between Bangladesh and Nigeria have deepened significantly, with bilateral trade more than doubling from $50 million to over $100 million in recent years.
Speaking in Abuja at a reception marking Bangladesh’s 54th Independence and National Day, Rahman highlighted the increasing economic and diplomatic engagements between the two nations. He noted that businesses and entrepreneurs from both countries are showing greater interest in forming strategic partnerships, expanding collaboration in key sectors such as ICT, agriculture, knitwear, government-to-state trade, and defense and diplomatic training through university partnerships.
He emphasized the historical and cultural ties between Bangladesh and Africa, particularly Nigeria, stating that both nations share common aspirations for economic growth and development. According to Rahman, these growing relations have led to stronger diplomatic cooperation and the potential for deeper engagements in emerging industries.
Rahman also revealed plans to explore opportunities in the blue economy, aiming to enhance maritime trade and resource management between the two nations. He stressed that with the right partnerships, Nigeria and Bangladesh can benefit from knowledge-sharing and technology exchange to drive sustainable development.
The High Commissioner reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering long-term economic collaboration with Nigeria. He expressed optimism that ongoing engagements will lead to more investment opportunities, job creation, and technological advancements that will benefit both countries.
