LASP is a component of the State’s Agricultural Youth Empowerment Scheme designed to expose students to modern and urban agricultural skills as a complement of the theoretical aspects taught in the classroom.
Over 100 senior secondary schools and 3 correctional centres have benefitted from the programme since 2019 with value chains featured being Aquaculture, Goat/Poultry Rearing and Modified Vegetable production. The LASP project is a channel towards getting students excited about healthy eating, with a longer term view to seeing agriculture as a viable enterprise in the same category as engineering, medicine and law.
In a bid to also communicate with school children through an engaging medium, a comic book series showcasing the different initiatives in the agric space was also launched to fostering engagement of young minds in agriculture.In 2023 and 2024, the project was scaled from open field and fish tank aquaculture operations to a smart aquaponics units, an innovative integrated agricultural technology.
This was implemented in twelve (12) secondary schools and a correctional Centre in the State. This year, 10 best schools that emerges from a competition on Vegetable production will be supported with net houses for all season production.Over 1,000 School teachers have benefited from this program by improving their agricultural production and teaching skills.
As part of the initiative, a statewide vegetable farming competition is now open to public and private senior secondary schools across Lagos.
According to the ministry, schools stand a chance to win farm inputs and equipment worth up to N10 million.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, interested school must possess the following criteria:
1. Availability of minimum of 300sq.mts of farmland suitable for agricultural use.
2. Accessibility of the land to the students and project monitoring officers.
3. Access to adequate water supply.
4. Availability of an in-house agricultural science teachers.
