The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially opened applications for the National Health Fellowship Programme 2025, following its recent approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. This strategic initiative is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by empowering young professionals to drive change at the grassroots level.

About the Programme
The National Health Fellowship is a 12-month leadership and capacity-building programme that equips young Nigerians with the knowledge, skills, and field experience required to transform the nation’s health sector. The fellowship is part of the government’s broader vision to upgrade existing primary healthcare centres and construct over 8,800 new facilities across all local government areas, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative introduces social accountability mechanisms to improve transparency, strengthen governance, and enhance service delivery within the primary healthcare system.

Programme Duration and Experience
Fellows will engage in:

  • Comprehensive training on health systems management, digital health, and leadership.
  • Hands-on fieldwork within local communities to assess, monitor, and support health interventions.
  • Mentorship and networking opportunities with top health experts, policymakers, and sector leaders.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be between 25 and 35 years old.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, IT, or Social Sciences.
  • Demonstrate interest or experience in public health, community development, or NGOs working in health-related fields.
  • Be available to participate full-time in the one-year programme.
  • Be an indigene of the state they are applying from.
  • Possess basic digital literacy, including proficiency with WhatsApp and Zoom.
  • Provide a recommendation letter from a University Dean, NYSC supervisor, or a reputable organization affirming character and leadership qualities.
  • Exhibit analytical ability, problem-solving capacity, and entrepreneurial drive (added advantages).

Benefits of the Fellowship

  • Advanced leadership and health systems training.
  • Mentorship from seasoned public health professionals.
  • Real-world project experience in community healthcare development.
  • National recognition and potential placement opportunities in health-related initiatives.

Why It Matters
Nigeria’s health system faces pressing challenges at the primary level. This fellowship empowers young professionals to take ownership of community health outcomes, drive policy implementation, and foster innovation that delivers sustainable change.

  • Emphasize your leadership experiences, community engagement, or health-related projects.
  • Prepare a compelling recommendation letter that validates your initiative and professionalism.
