About the Project:
The WVL project is a five-year project funded by Global Affairs Canada. The project is aimed at tackling the barriers to gender equality and supporting the empowerment of women and girls through the provision of technical and financial resources to local feminist/women’s rights organizations (LWROs[1]) that are advancing the rights of women and girls and championing gender equality.
The Call
The WVL Nigeria Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) is a small grant designed to support innovative ideas and initiatives addressing women and girls’ rights issues from feminist organizations and/or women’s rights organizations or movements in Nigeria. The funding opportunity targets innovative ideas which can serve as a catalyst for new ways of doing things toward achieving gender equality and or women and girls enjoying their rights.
Since 2020, LWROs from the six project-implementing states (Lagos, Kwara, Enugu, Kebbi, Bauchi, and the Federal Capital Territory) and more, received SIF grants to implement innovative projects. These innovative projects included actions that addressed sexual and reproductive health rights of women and girls, advancing women’s political participation, and increasing girls’ enrolment and retention in secondary schools.
These innovative projects have included a wide range of women and girls-focused interventions aimed at contributing towards the enjoyment of human rights by women and girls and advancing gender equality in Nigeria. Some of these innovations include employing hybrid platforms to ensure girl’s enrolment and retention in secondary schools, particularly at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as seen in Kebbi State, building of an App for adolescent and teenage girls to track their menstrual cycles and access important SRH information in Oyo State. The establishment of the Female Basketball League in Kaduna State gave girls an opportunity to express themselves through sports. Promotion of the Rights of Women with Disabilities and strengthening their participation in politics, done in the FCT. A Radio Drama Series in Ondo State advocating against discrimination towards single mothers; no maternity cover in their places of work. Awareness creation and advocacy for policies to address and alleviate Post Partum Depression in women done in the FCT and development of a short film to address Post Partum Depression in women as done in Plateau State amongst others.
Many of these interventions employed technology and other forms of participatory actions, thus making their proposed work distinct.
