The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has received funding from Luminate to launch an inclusive Artificial Intelligence (AI) collective in Nigeria. This initiative aims to drive nationwide research, innovation, and governance of AI technologies while fostering a vibrant community of practice.
Leading the initiative, CJID, in collaboration with Lagos Business School (Pan-Atlantic University) and Data Science Nigeria, will ensure that AI in Nigeria is developed and deployed responsibly and ethically for the benefit of society.
CJID will coordinate the collective’s efforts around AI governance, collaborating with civil society organizations and media NGOs to explore AI’s implications in the information ecosystem and society at large.
Lagos Business School will lead research activities and provide training programs to nurture talent, while Data Science Nigeria will focus on fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in AI.
The establishment of the Nigerian AI Collective aims to position Nigeria as a leading force in AI for good, spurring economic growth, innovation, and societal advancement.
Akintunde Babatunde, Director of Programs at CJID, expressed gratitude to Luminate and outlined CJID’s commitment to enhancing journalism across Africa through innovative tools and support for journalists and civil society.
The collective’s objectives include facilitating knowledge sharing, capacity building, innovation and research, policy advocacy, and cultivating international partnerships to advance AI in Nigeria.
CJID, as a leading media development think tank, is dedicated to breaking information barriers and driving media innovation across Africa, empowering journalists and media professionals in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
