Lions Clubs International, under the leadership of Past District Governor (PDG) Adelaja Adeleye, has launched its Global Service Week in Lagos with a hunger relief initiative, empowering over 500 vulnerable individuals, including people living with disabilities.
The event, held at the residence of PDG Bolarinwa in Akowonjo, Lagos, saw beneficiaries receive food items and other essential supplies aimed at addressing immediate nutritional needs. Adeleye explained that the initiative forms part of Lions Clubs International’s global mission to serve communities and tackle pressing challenges such as hunger.
“It is inspiring to know that as we serve here today, millions of Lions are doing the same across the world,” Adeleye said, emphasizing that hunger relief has been a core focus for Lions Clubs, with local chapters worldwide organizing food drives, school feeding programs, and sustainable initiatives to combat food insecurity.
Adeleye added, “The January Global Service Week calls on every Lion, every club, and every district to rise in unity and compassion to translate our motto ‘We Serve’ into tangible action. Beyond the distribution of food, we also aim to spread hope, showing our communities that someone cares.”
Committee Chairperson, Adetokunbo Adedamola, welcomed the beneficiaries and highlighted the purpose behind the initiative. “This gathering is rooted in compassion and service. Our district has set measurable goals to provide nutritional support across Ota, Abeokuta, Ibadan, and Lagos, targeting families, widows, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups. This is not a one-day gesture but a reflection of our long-standing commitment to community empowerment,” she said.
The initiative also underscored the importance of collaboration, with Adeleye encouraging clubs to work with community stakeholders and relevant agencies to maximize impact. By combining coordinated efforts with local engagement, Lions Clubs aim to create sustainable support systems for the most vulnerable members of society.
Through this hunger relief program, Lions Clubs International has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering communities, addressing immediate needs, and promoting social resilience across Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.
